Brooklyn is chicken crazed! →
The coop pictured at this link is actually really cute, and is practically a bargain compared to Williams Sonoma at $785. Chickens included!

Weekend to do
If you haven’t noticed, my blog description says “no money, time, or experience” and that is not (much) of a joke! It is even less of a joke on the money and time fronts. Because of work and other obligations I have a lot less time than I’d like to work on my house and yard. But! In a little less than an hour I will begin a three day weekend, which means an entire extra...

Save Your Green With Frugal Gardening Tips →
Here are some tips on how to get cheap/free plants. The off-season plant sale might be a good place to get some bushes for our backyard. I also just ordered a few packets of seeds!

30% off our goat milk caramels on Black Board Eats... →
Even in the short time since I’ve started this blog I’ve discovered so many wonderful blogs about gardening and farming. My new favorite is Farm Weather, a blog by a couple who run a goat farm in Vermont and have a business making caramels from the goat’s milk. I have a long standing and well-documented love of goats so this is right up my alley. Anyway, today there is a deal...

Mystery solved
Through diligent googling, I figured out that my mystery flower is Lychnis coronaria alba! It’s common name is white rose campion. It sounds like a great little plant and I am going to order a ton! seedaholic.com says: It is an all round tough plant suitable for problem areas. It tolerates full sun and sandy, drought-prone soils but produces the best leaf colour in dry soil. Suitable for...

Shocking update
So I assembled and planted the cinder block planter on Friday and was feeling pretty pleased with myself. Then on Sunday I glanced out the kitchen window and realized there were three to four MORE cinder blocks hiding next to the shed. Back to the drawing board! Pictures to come soon, if it ever stops raining.

Worms...?
Some local kids have put together worm composting starter kits for $5 as a way to make money this summer. Their mom put a message on our neighborhood listserv about it and without really thinking I responded that I would buy one! I have been wanting to start composting for awhile and I guess this thing is happening now. She’s also giving away some tomato and pepper plants but I bet I was...

Recognizing poisonous plants  →
I really need to study up on this stuff. I wouldn’t have recognized any of these.

Oh no
I have been planning for quite some time to plant some big clumps of citronella grass along the back wall of the house as a passive mosquito repellant. We have a crazy mosquito problem in the backyard and I like the way the citronella grass looks, especially for that space (I’m going to post pictures of the yard with some tentative plans about what I want to plant where, soon). I thought...

Sunflower micro greens!
Not only did this post on sunflower micro greens look really cool (you only need an inch of soil and two weeks to grow them!) but it also solved the mystery of What is Growing Underneath the Bird Feeder. Have you seen how many types of bird seed are available at your local big box hardware store? Including all the region-specific mixes there are offerings like Finches Supreme, Orange Raisin-Nut...

On chickens
As a well-known friend to all animals I obviously want chickens in some abstract way, but I also know it’s a real slippery slope from getting chickens “for eggs” to then suddenly finding myself at the emergency vet with a $700 bill for chicken surgery. Regardless, I’m pretty sure it’s illegal for us to have chickens because Montgomery County law says the coop must be...
